About This Video
Nayara Goncalves was back to work behind the counter at the MetroPCS store in Pompano Beach on Friday.
The 20-year-old Boca Raton woman has been getting plenty of extra attention for allegedly using the message of Jesus to talk a man out of robbing the business last Friday at about 10 a.m.
Goncalves said the man — who police identified as 37-year-old Israel Camacho, of Coral Springs — entered the store dressed in all black clothes. She said she figured something was wrong because he didn’t take off his hat.
Surveillance video showed the man pretending to be interested in buying a phone. Then, he’s seen pulling a gun and trying to rob the store.
Goncalves remained calm in the video and offered some Godly advice.
“I said, ‘Well, before you do anything, before you take the money, I want to tell you about God, about Jesus. I’m Christian,'” Goncalves said. “He’s like, ‘Oh, so am I.’ I’m like, ‘So why are you doing this?'”
Goncalves said she was able to convince the would-be robber to leave the store empty-handed.
Employees at the pet groomer business next door to the Metro PCS are still talking about the incident.
“I heard that she talked him out of it, which is fantastic,” Mary Butkus said. “I don’t know what I would have done. I probably would have passed out.”
“She’s very brave,” Jackie DeVito said. “She said a lot of good things. God was watching her, thank God.”
Goncalves said she doesn’t think she was brave. She said she was just doing the Lord’s work.
“I feel like (at) some point I touched him, and I really hope that if he’s watching it right now, please don’t do that,” Goncalves said.
Police said they arrested Camacho last Sunday. They said they believe he left the Metro PCS store and instead robbed a Payless shoe store in Oakland Park.
Police said he put a handgun in a shoe box and forced a clerk to hand him cash from the register. Witnesses said when the man left, he said, ‘God Bless you,’ and slowly walked out of the store.
Police said Camacho was charged with armed robbery after surveillance video at Payless captured him at 12:45 p.m. last Friday.
Evidence gathered in their investigation into the Metro PCS incident led detectives to Camacho, and attempted armed robbery was added to his charges on Friday.
